Romania's blend of medieval charm and modern infrastructure makes it a sleeper hit for remote workers. Bucharest and Cluj-Napoca offer thriving coworking scenes, fibre internet that rivals Western Europe, and living costs that let you stretch your budget without compromising on quality. Beyond the cities, you'll find castle-dotted hills, Saxon fortified towns, and the Carpathian Mountains—all accessible for long weekends when you need to unplug. The café culture runs deep, with third-wave coffee shops doubling as impromptu offices, and English is widely spoken in tech hubs. Romania gives you the productivity of a connected capital with the romance of cobblestone side streets.

Why Romania works for for digital nomads

Homes, not hotel rooms

Live in a real Romania home — kitchen, balcony, neighbourhood rhythm — instead of a generic hotel room.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

Which Romanian cities have the best digital nomad infrastructure?

Cluj-Napoca leads for tech community and coworking density, with a young, English-speaking population and reliable utilities. Bucharest offers the most variety—from sleek coworking chains to indie cafés with strong Wi-Fi—plus international flight connections. Timișoara and Brașov are gaining traction for slower-paced living with solid internet and mountain access. Across all four, expect fibre speeds above 100 Mbps as standard, affordable SIM data, and a growing roster of nomad-friendly events and meetups.
