Raising kids in a place where barefoot is the norm and nature is the backyard changes how a family moves through the day. New Zealand's compact cities nestle against beaches, forests, and volcanic parks—most homes sit within a twenty-minute drive of a playground, a coastline, or a walking trail that doesn't require a car shuttle. School holidays here sync with outdoor rhythms: summer means beach towns and cicadas, winter brings snow parks accessible even to small legs. The kiwi habit of afternoon 'bach time' and community sports clubs woven into weekends makes it easy for visiting families to slip into a rhythm that feels less like sightseeing and more like a season of childhood your kids will remember.

Why New Zealand works for for families

Homes, not hotel rooms

Live in a real New Zealand home — kitchen, balcony, neighbourhood rhythm — instead of a generic hotel room.

Curated for for families

We prioritise homes sleeping 4+ people · wifi, kitchen, washer · house, villa, apartments — the kind of homes that actually fit the travel style.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 7 free credits — one full week — so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All conversations happen inside the SwappaHome platform — you never have to share your personal email or phone number to coordinate a swap. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What makes New Zealand particularly suited for families with young children?

New Zealand's infrastructure assumes kids will be outdoors—most suburbs have fenced playgrounds, shallow tidal pools, and flat walking paths designed for scooters and training wheels. The culture leans heavily on casual, early dinners and BYO picnics, so family routines don't clash with local dining hours. Pharmacies and medical centres are plentiful in residential areas, and the relaxed pace means you're rarely rushing between activities. Many beaches have patrolled swim zones and gentle waves, and the national museum in Wellington offers free entry with dedicated toddler zones.
