Family trips to Romania reward you with castles that feel like storybooks, mountain trails gentle enough for small legs, and a pace that doesn't rush bedtimes. Cities like Brașov and Sibiu offer cobbled squares where kids can run freely, bakeries with sweet cozonac, and fortified churches that double as history lessons without the museum fatigue. The countryside unfolds in painted monasteries, horse-drawn carts, and guesthouses where grandmothers still make jam. Whether you're based in Transylvania's Saxon towns or near the Carpathian foothills, Romania gives families space to slow down, explore castles without the crowds, and taste a Europe that hasn't been over-polished.

Why Romania works for for families

Homes, not hotel rooms

Live in a real Romania home — kitchen, balcony, neighbourhood rhythm — instead of a generic hotel room.

Fair by design

1 credit = 1 night. Every home is worth the same. No bidding, no haggling, no price surges.

Curated for for families

We prioritise homes sleeping 4+ people · wifi, kitchen, washer · house, villa, apartments — the kind of homes that actually fit the travel style.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All conversations happen inside the SwappaHome platform — you never have to share your personal email or phone number to coordinate a swap. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

Which parts of Romania are best for families with young children?

Brașov and Sibiu stand out for their walkable old towns, playgrounds tucked into medieval squares, and easy day trips to Bran Castle or Peleș Palace. Both have pedestrian centres where strollers navigate easily, plus nearby forests for gentle hikes. The Maramureș region offers a slower, rural rhythm with wooden churches and farm stays, ideal if your kids enjoy animals and open fields. Bucharest has excellent parks like Herăstrău and child-friendly museums, though the traffic requires more vigilance. Coastal Constanța works for beach-loving families in summer, with shallow Black Sea waters and resort infrastructure.
