Romania unfolds like a storybook for families, where medieval castles aren't just backdrops but living history lessons. The Carpathian foothills offer gentle trails perfect for young hikers, while towns like Brașov and Sibiu blend cobblestone charm with spacious parks and playgrounds. Romanian hospitality runs deep—locals adore children, and you'll find family tables stretching long at Sunday meals. From the painted monasteries of Bucovina to the Danube Delta's birdwatching adventures, this is a country where curiosity gets rewarded and kids can roam safely in neighbourhoods where multi-generational living is still the norm.

Why Romania works for for families

Homes, not hotel rooms

Live in a real Romania home — kitchen, balcony, neighbourhood rhythm — instead of a generic hotel room.

Fair by design

1 credit = 1 night. Every home is worth the same. No bidding, no haggling, no price surges.

Curated for for families

We prioritise homes sleeping 4+ people · wifi, kitchen, washer · house, villa, apartments — the kind of homes that actually fit the travel style.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What makes Romania a good fit for families with children?

Romania combines affordability with genuine safety and warmth toward children. Cities like Cluj-Napoca and Timișoara have excellent parks, interactive museums, and pedestrian zones where kids can move freely. The countryside offers hands-on experiences—farm stays, traditional craft workshops, and castles that spark imagination without the crowds of Western Europe. Public transport is reliable, and Romanians often go out of their way to help families. The food is hearty and familiar enough for cautious eaters, with plenty of grilled meats, fresh bread, and sweet pastries to win over even picky palates.
