Home Exchange in Yogyakarta

No verified homes listed in Yogyakarta yet — the first hosts get priority placement.

Yogyakarta moves to a different clock. Becak drivers pedal past batik workshops where hands have repeated the same wax patterns for generations. The smell of gudeg—young jackfruit stewed overnight in coconut milk and palm sugar—drifts from warungs near the kraton, the sultan's palace that still anchors daily life. Volcanic soil from Merapi feeds the rice terraces that climb toward the foothills, while Prambanan's Hindu spires and Borobudur's stone stupas remind you this city has always been Java's cultural heart. Nights belong to Malioboro's street food carts and the clatter of gamelan rehearsals echoing from neighborhood pavilions.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What's the best way to experience Yogyakarta's neighborhoods?

Stay near the kraton to walk to batik galleries and traditional markets, or base yourself in the Prawirotaman area for quieter streets lined with guesthouses and cafés. Kota Gede, the old silversmithing quarter, rewards slow wandering. Rent a motorbike to reach the temples at dawn or explore villages around Kaliurang on Merapi's slopes. The city is compact enough to bicycle, though the heat peaks midday—early mornings and late afternoons are when Yogyakarta feels most itself.
