Home Exchange in Merzouga

No verified homes listed in Merzouga yet — the first hosts get priority placement.

Merzouga sits at the edge of the Sahara's Erg Chebbi dunes, where the desert announces itself in waves of amber sand that climb a hundred metres high. Mornings here begin with the call to prayer drifting across palm groves, and evenings end with mint tea under a sky so clear you can trace the Milky Way with your finger. The village itself is small and unhurried—a scatter of kasbahs and guesthouses where Berber hospitality still means sharing bread and stories. Beyond the dunes, the landscape shifts: fossil beds, seasonal lakes that draw flamingos, and hammada plains stretching toward Algeria.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

When's the best time to visit Merzouga?

October through April offers the most comfortable desert temperatures—warm days, cool nights perfect for sleeping under stars. Summer (June–August) sees extreme heat, often above 45°C, though it's quieter and locals say the light at dawn is unmatched. Spring brings occasional wildflowers to the hammada, and autumn's harvest season means fresh dates in the palmeries. Winter nights can drop near freezing, so pack layers if you're planning a dune camp. Avoid July and August unless you're chasing solitude and can handle the furnace.
