Estonia rewards the curious with layers most visitors miss. Medieval Tallinn's cobbled lanes open onto avant-garde design studios and digital art installations. Beyond the capital, Lahemaa's coastal trails wind past Soviet-era fishing kollektivs and manor houses turned into quirky museums. The country's dense forests hide song festival grounds and open-air ethnographic villages where you can watch blacksmiths and weavers at work. Island-hopping to Saaremaa or Hiiumaa reveals windmill-dotted landscapes, meteor craters, and tiny smoke saunas by the Baltic. Estonia's compact size means you can experience bog-walking at sunrise, a contemporary theatre performance by evening, and still have time for a proper rye bread tasting.

Why Estonia works for things to do

Homes, not hotel rooms

Live in a real Estonia home — kitchen, balcony, neighbourhood rhythm — instead of a generic hotel room.

Fair by design

1 credit = 1 night. Every home is worth the same. No bidding, no haggling, no price surges.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What are some unique cultural experiences in Estonia beyond the typical tourist sites?

Join a smoke sauna ritual followed by a cold Baltic dip — it's a genuine local tradition, not a spa gimmick. Time your visit for a song festival rehearsal in Tallinn's massive outdoor amphitheatre, where thousands gather to sing. Explore the Seaplane Harbour's interactive maritime museum inside a historic hangar, or take a Soviet-era architecture tour through Tallinn's Lasnamäe district. In smaller towns, look for 'rahvamaja' community centres hosting folk dance evenings and handicraft workshops open to visitors.
