New Zealand rewards the restless. From the geothermal trails and Māori cultural sites around Rotorua to the fiords and alpine passes of the South Island, this country packs astonishing variety into a compact geography. Adventure seekers find themselves hiking volcanic craters in the morning and soaking in natural hot pools by afternoon. The coastline delivers world-class surf breaks, while inland you'll encounter glow-worm caves, wine valleys, and forest walks that feel lifted from fantasy novels. Staying in residential neighbourhoods puts you closer to local tramping clubs, farmers' markets, and the kind of regional festivals that don't make international guidebooks but define Kiwi life.

Why New Zealand works for things to do

Homes, not hotel rooms

Live in a real New Zealand home — kitchen, balcony, neighbourhood rhythm — instead of a generic hotel room.

Fair by design

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What are the must-do experiences in New Zealand beyond the famous tourist spots?

Venture to the Coromandel Peninsula to dig your own hot pool at Hot Water Beach, or kayak the Abel Tasman coastal track at dawn when seals are most active. In the North Island, explore the Waitomo glow-worm caves by blackwater rafting rather than the standard boat tour. South Island locals will point you toward lesser-known tracks like the Routeburn or Kepler, which rival Milford Sound without the crowds. Don't miss a hangi meal with a Māori community, or a wine-bike tour through Central Otago's cellar doors. Kiwis live outdoors—follow their lead.
