Norway unfolds as an activity lover's dream, where dramatic fjords invite kayaking beneath sheer cliffs, and mountain trails lead to glacier tongues you can walk across with crampons. Summer brings midnight sun hikes through alpine meadows dotted with wild reindeer, while winter transforms the landscape into a northern lights theatre with dogsledding and cross-country skiing from your doorstep. Coastal towns offer whale-watching safaris and fishing expeditions, and even the cities pulse with outdoor access—Oslo's forests begin at the tram's end, Bergen's seven mountains encircle the harbour. Staying in a local home means waking up where Norwegians do: near trailheads, fjord edges, and the quiet starting lines of everyday adventure.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What outdoor activities can I realistically do year-round in Norway?

Hiking remains the national pastime across all seasons, with coastal paths accessible even in winter and marked trails through forests surrounding most towns. Fjord kayaking runs April through October, while northern lights chasing and cross-country skiing take over November to March. Fishing needs no season—Norwegians ice-fish in winter and cast from rocky shores in summer. Most regions offer cycling routes along old postal roads, and via ferrata climbing routes have opened near Stavanger and Åndalsnes. The key is layering properly; Norwegians say there's no bad weather, only bad clothing.
