Argentina stretches your travel budget further than almost anywhere in South America. Beyond the favourable exchange rates, the country rewards slow travellers with affordable empanadas on every corner, buses that connect vast distances for a fraction of flight costs, and neighbourhoods where a coffee and medialunas become your daily ritual without guilt. From Mendoza's wine country hostels to Patagonia's free trekking routes, Argentina's infrastructure supports shoestring adventures. Markets brim with fresh produce, parrillas offer filling meals at neighbourhood prices, and the culture of mate-sharing means locals welcome budget travellers into everyday moments without expectation of spending.

Why Argentina works for budget-friendly

Homes, not hotel rooms

Live in a real Argentina home — kitchen, balcony, neighbourhood rhythm — instead of a generic hotel room.

Fair by design

1 credit = 1 night. Every home is worth the same. No bidding, no haggling, no price surges.

Curated for budget-friendly

We prioritise kitchen · apartment, cottage, cabins — the kind of homes that actually fit the travel style.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What are the biggest money-saving advantages of staying in Argentina as a budget traveller?

Argentina's long-distance bus network is exceptional and affordable, making overland travel between regions feasible without flying. Eating like locals — think set-menu almuerzos, choripán from street carts, and cooking with market produce — keeps costs remarkably low. Many of the country's best experiences, from glacier viewpoints to urban street art tours, are free or donation-based. Neighbourhoods outside tourist centres offer authentic experiences at a fraction of the cost, and the tradition of afternoon mate means social connection doesn't require bar tabs.
