Budget-Friendly Home Exchange in Malta

Skip hotels entirely and travel for the cost of credits.

Malta delivers Mediterranean charm without the Mediterranean price tag. Budget-conscious travellers find excellent value in local pastizzis from village bakeries, affordable bus passes connecting all three islands, and free access to stunning coastal walks along the Dingli Cliffs. Beyond Valletta's honey-stone streets, neighbourhoods like Sliema and Marsaxlokk offer authentic experiences where a harbour-side lunch costs less than a coffee in most European capitals. The compact size means you're never far from a swimming spot, and many of Malta's baroque churches, fishing villages, and sunset viewpoints cost nothing to explore.

Why Malta works for budget-friendly

Homes, not hotel rooms

Live in a real Malta home — kitchen, balcony, neighbourhood rhythm — instead of a generic hotel room.

Fair by design

1 credit = 1 night. Every home is worth the same. No bidding, no haggling, no price surges.

Curated for budget-friendly

We prioritise kitchen · apartment, cottage, cabins — the kind of homes that actually fit the travel style.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

How can budget travellers get around Malta affordably?

Malta's public bus network is exceptionally budget-friendly, with a seven-day Explore Card offering unlimited travel across Malta, Gozo, and Comino for around €21. Buses connect nearly every village and beach, running frequently during summer months. For island-hopping, the Gozo ferry is inexpensive and foot passengers pay minimal fees. Walking is genuinely viable in compact areas like Valletta, Mdina, and the Three Cities. Renting bikes works well for flat coastal routes, though Malta's hills can be challenging. Most locals speak English, making navigation straightforward without expensive tours.
