Austria's cities reveal themselves in layers—imperial boulevards give way to contemporary art districts, coffeehouses anchor neighbourhoods with century-old traditions, and tram lines connect baroque centres to vineyard-edged suburbs. For travellers who want to understand a place through its urban rhythms, Austrian cities offer compact walkability paired with distinct personalities: Vienna's grand cultural institutions and Naschmarkt buzz, Salzburg's fortress views and festival calendar, Graz's design-forward courtyards, Innsbruck's alpine backdrop meeting Renaissance arcades. Living in residential neighbourhoods rather than tourist corridors means morning bakery runs, evening wine taverns, and the kind of spatial familiarity that turns sightseeing into genuine exploration.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

How do you navigate between Austria's cities and what makes each worth more than a day trip?

Austria's rail network makes city-hopping effortless—Vienna to Salzburg is under three hours, Graz to Innsbruck crosses the country in four—but each city rewards slower immersion. Vienna demands at least four days for museum depth and coffeehouse culture. Salzburg's compact Altstadt pairs with lake district access. Graz offers unexpected contemporary edge and surrounding castle villages. Innsbruck balances urban alpine life with mountain access. Linz and Klagenfurt provide riverside calm without crowds. Staying in residential districts reveals daily market life, neighbourhood Heurigen wine taverns, and the rhythms tourists miss on quick passes through.
