City Guide Home Exchange in Costa Rica

Costa Rica's cities pulse with a rhythm distinct from its famous rainforests and beaches. San José reveals its character through the golden-hued Teatro Nacional and the bustling Mercado Central, where morning coffee culture meets contemporary art galleries in Barrio Escalante. Smaller urban centers like Heredia and Cartago offer colonial architecture within walking distance of volcano viewpoints, while Pacific-side Puntarenas and Caribbean Limón each carry their own coastal-urban flavour. For travellers who want to understand a place through its street life, museums, and neighbourhood cafés rather than just its nature reserves, Costa Rica's cities provide an unhurried, authentic counterpoint to the eco-tourism trail.

Frequently asked questions
How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?
You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.
Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?
Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.
Do I need to swap directly with the same person?
No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.
Can I join if I don't own a home?
Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.
What makes San José worth exploring as an urban destination?
San José surprises visitors who give it time. The downtown core around Avenida Central mixes pre-Columbian gold museums with third-wave coffee roasters, while Barrio Amón's Victorian mansions now house boutique hotels and galleries. The city's walkable scale means you can cover the Museo Nacional, Mercado Central, and a sunset viewpoint in Parque La Sabana in a single day. Evenings come alive in Barrio Escalante, where craft beer bars and farm-to-table restaurants reflect Costa Rica's growing culinary scene. It's a city best experienced on foot, with layers that reveal themselves slowly.
