City Guide Home Exchange in New Zealand

In-depth destination guides for home exchangers.

New Zealand's cities unfold like compact chapters in a much larger story of mountains and coastlines. Wellington clings to hillsides above a harbour where art galleries share streets with craft roasteries. Auckland sprawls across volcanic cones and two harbours, its neighbourhoods stitched together by ferry routes and waterfront walks. Christchurch rebuilds itself with bold architecture and laneway bars, while Dunedin's Victorian bones house a thriving student quarter and craft beer scene. Each city offers walkable cores, reliable public transit, and that distinctly Kiwi mix of outdoorsy pragmatism and creative energy—perfect for travellers who want urban texture without losing sight of the wild edges.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

How do New Zealand's cities differ in character and what should city explorers prioritize in each?

Wellington rewards walkers with steep cable car rides, Cuba Street's vintage shops, and Te Papa's storytelling. Auckland spreads wider—focus on specific neighbourhoods like Ponsonby for dining or Devonport for village charm. Christchurch centres on the rebuilt core around Riverside Market and street art precincts. Dunedin thrives on heritage architecture and the Otago Peninsula's wildlife just minutes away. Queenstown feels more resort town than city, but its lakefront and Remarkables views deliver. Most cities punch above their size for coffee culture, and you'll find excellent Asian and Pacific cuisine reflecting the country's demographics.
