Romania's cities unfold like chapters in a living history book, each with its own architectural dialect and rhythm. Bucharest mixes Belle Époque grandeur with brutalist monuments and hidden gardens tucked behind wrought-iron gates. Cluj-Napoca hums with university energy and Austro-Hungarian elegance, while Brașov opens onto medieval squares framed by the Carpathians. Timișoara's Art Nouveau facades and cafe-lined plazas feel distinctly Central European, and Sibiu's cobbled lanes and watchful-eyed rooftops reward slow wandering. Beyond the guidebook highlights, Romania's urban fabric rewards curiosity—covered passages, neighbourhood markets, rooftop views over terracotta and green copper domes.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What makes Romanian cities distinctive for urban explorers?

Romanian cities layer Ottoman, Habsburg, and Communist-era architecture into surprisingly walkable centres. You'll find Art Nouveau doorways next to Ceaușescu-era concrete, Orthodox churches beside synagogues, and thriving cafe culture in renovated industrial spaces. Public transport is affordable and functional, though signage can be Cyrillic-inflected. Most city centres have pedestrian cores perfect for discovering courtyard galleries, second-hand bookshops, and family-run patisseries. English is common among younger residents, and neighbourhoods retain distinct identities—university quarters, former merchant districts, riverside promenades—that reveal themselves over multiple visits.
