Slovenia's compact cities reveal layers of history within walking distance. Ljubljana's car-free old town unfolds along the Ljubljanica River, where Jože Plečnik's bridges and market colonnades create architectural punctuation between Baroque façades and castle-crowned hills. Maribor's vine-draped Lent district claims the world's oldest producing grapevine, while Ptuj's medieval core preserves Roman foundations beneath Gothic arcades. Each city anchors a distinct region—Alpine valleys, Karst caves, Adriatic coastline—making Slovenia ideal for urban explorers who want cultural depth without sprawl. Distances are forgiving: you can breakfast in a Renaissance square, lunch in wine country, and return for evening concerts in the same day.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What makes Slovenian cities different from other Central European capitals for urban exploration?

Slovenian cities operate at human scale. Ljubljana bans cars from its centre, so exploration happens on foot or bicycle along river promenades. Architecture tells a specific story: Plečnik's interwar modernism overlays Austro-Hungarian bones, creating a visual language you won't find elsewhere. Beyond Ljubljana, cities like Piran and Koper press Venetian Gothic against the Adriatic, while Celje and Ptuj offer castle-crowned medieval cores without tourist crowds. Most locals speak English, café culture runs deep, and you're never more than an hour from dramatic countryside—caves, gorges, lakes—that frames each city differently.
