South Africa's cities unfold like chapters in different books. Cape Town spreads beneath Table Mountain with its Waterfront buzz and Bo-Kaap's candy-coloured lanes. Johannesburg pulses with Maboneng's street art and the living history of Soweto. Durban brings Indian Ocean warmth, curry-scented markets, and a Golden Mile promenade. Pretoria's jacaranda-lined avenues bloom purple each spring, while Stellenbosch and Franschhoek anchor the Winelands with Cape Dutch architecture and cellar doors. Each city carries its own accent, its own rhythm—from the Afrikaans-English blend of the Cape to the multilingual energy of Joburg's northern suburbs.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

How do South African cities differ from each other for urban explorers?

Cape Town leans coastal and cosmopolitan, with mountain hikes minutes from galleries and beaches. Johannesburg is higher, drier, more sprawling—its soul lives in neighbourhoods like Melville and Braamfontein, not a single downtown. Durban stays humid and subtropical, with a strong Indian cultural layer in the Warwick Junction markets and beachfront bunny chow stalls. Pretoria feels more administrative and green, while the Winelands towns offer walkable historic cores. Public transport varies widely; Cape Town and Joburg have limited metro systems, so most city exploring happens by car or rideshare.
