Chile's geography stretches long and narrow, offering digital nomads a rare trifecta: Pacific coast surf towns with fibre internet, Santiago's thriving tech hubs and co-working culture, and Patagonian retreats where you can close your laptop to glaciers outside the window. The country runs on a stable timezone (GMT-3/4), making overlap with both European and North American clients manageable, while the cost of living in secondary cities like Valparaíso or La Serena remains surprisingly gentle on monthly budgets. With excellent domestic connectivity via bus and short flights, you can shift your base from the Atacama's desert silence to Santiago's buzzing Barrio Lastarria without losing momentum on projects.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 7 free credits — one full week — so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All conversations happen inside the SwappaHome platform — you never have to share your personal email or phone number to coordinate a swap. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What's the internet reliability like for remote work in Chile?

Santiago, Valparaíso, and Viña del Mar offer dependable fibre connections, often exceeding 100 Mbps, with co-working spaces clustered in neighbourhoods like Providencia and Bellavista. Smaller coastal towns and northern desert cities have improved significantly in recent years, though it's wise to confirm backup mobile data plans through Entel or Movistar. Patagonian towns can be patchier — Puerto Natales and Punta Arenas have workable speeds, but expect occasional drops during peak tourist season. Most Chilean rentals now list internet specs upfront, reflecting the country's growing remote work culture.
