Indonesia offers families an extraordinary blend of gentle beaches, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality that makes travelling with children feel like an adventure rather than a challenge. From the rice terraces of Bali where kids can watch farmers work alongside ducks, to the calm shores of Lombok perfect for first-time snorkelers, the archipelago rewards curious young minds. Street food is approachable—nasi goreng and mie goreng are instant hits with picky eaters—and locals genuinely delight in children, often going out of their way to help families feel welcome. The pace is unhurried, distances between family-friendly activities manageable, and you'll find a rhythm that lets everyone explore without exhaustion.

Why Indonesia works for for families

Homes, not hotel rooms

Live in a real Indonesia home — kitchen, balcony, neighbourhood rhythm — instead of a generic hotel room.

Fair by design

1 credit = 1 night. Every home is worth the same. No bidding, no haggling, no price surges.

Curated for for families

We prioritise homes sleeping 4+ people · wifi, kitchen, washer · house, villa, apartments — the kind of homes that actually fit the travel style.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

Which parts of Indonesia are most practical for families with young children?

Bali's Sanur and Ubud areas are exceptionally family-friendly, with calm beaches, shallow pools, and a strong expat community that means reliable healthcare and familiar comforts when needed. Yogyakarta offers cultural richness—temples, batik workshops, and the chance to see Borobudur at sunrise—while remaining compact and easy to navigate. Lombok's Senggigi coast provides a quieter alternative with gentle waves and fewer crowds. Across these regions, guesthouses and warungs are accustomed to families, high chairs appear without asking, and the tropical climate means outdoor play year-round.
