Raising kids in a country where forest schools are the norm and 'allemansrätten' grants everyone the right to roam freely changes how a family travels. Sweden's unhurried rhythm—long summer daylight, accessible nature reserves minutes from city centres, and a culture that genuinely prioritises children in public spaces—makes it easier to slow down and let curiosity lead. From Stockholm's island playgrounds and Gothenburg's maritime museums to Malmö's bike-friendly streets and the northern forests where reindeer outnumber people, Swedish homes often sit within walking distance of both wilderness and well-stocked libraries. The homes below reflect that balance: places where your children can wake to birdsong, bike to a bakery for kardemummabullar, and return to neighbourhoods designed for safe, independent exploration.

Why Sweden works for for families

Homes, not hotel rooms

Live in a real Sweden home — kitchen, balcony, neighbourhood rhythm — instead of a generic hotel room.

Fair by design

1 credit = 1 night. Every home is worth the same. No bidding, no haggling, no price surges.

Curated for for families

We prioritise homes sleeping 4+ people · wifi, kitchen, washer · house, villa, apartments — the kind of homes that actually fit the travel style.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All conversations happen inside the SwappaHome platform — you never have to share your personal email or phone number to coordinate a swap. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What makes Sweden particularly family-friendly beyond the stereotypes?

Swedish family life revolves around 'lagom'—not too much, not too little—which translates into practical everyday ease. Pavements are wide and pram-accessible, restaurants expect high chairs and colouring sheets, and public transport runs on time with space for buggies. Most residential areas have nearby 'lekplatser' (playgrounds) with inventive wooden structures, and supermarkets stock affordable organic baby food as standard. The culture also respects quiet time: Sundays are for 'fredagsmys' rituals, and even in cities, you're never far from a forest trail where children can climb trees, pick berries, and learn to light a campfire safely.
