Costa Rica has long drawn retirees seeking a slower pace wrapped in natural beauty. The country's emphasis on wellness—its Blue Zone in Nicoya, warm mineral springs dotting the highlands, and a culture that prizes *pura vida*—creates an environment where days unfold gently. You'll find established expat communities in the Central Valley and along the Pacific coast, making it easier to settle into routines that blend local markets, Spanish conversation groups, and afternoon swims. The climate varies beautifully by elevation: coastal towns stay warm year-round, while mountain villages like those near the coffee highlands offer perpetual spring. Healthcare is excellent and affordable, and the country's political stability adds a layer of ease that matters when you're planning extended stays.

Why Costa Rica works for for retirees

Homes, not hotel rooms

Live in a real Costa Rica home — kitchen, balcony, neighbourhood rhythm — instead of a generic hotel room.

Fair by design

1 credit = 1 night. Every home is worth the same. No bidding, no haggling, no price surges.

Curated for for retirees

We prioritise heating, air conditioning, wifi · house, apartment, villas — the kind of homes that actually fit the travel style.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

Which regions of Costa Rica are most comfortable for retirees seeking community and amenities?

The Central Valley—especially areas around Heredia and Escazú—offers mild weather, quality healthcare, and active expat networks with book clubs and volunteer groups. For a coastal feel, towns along the Guanacaste Pacific coast provide beach access, reliable services, and a relaxed rhythm. The Southern Zone near Uvita attracts retirees wanting more seclusion and nature without sacrificing essentials. Elevation matters: highlands stay cooler and drier, while lowlands are tropical and humid. Most retirees gravitate toward places with walkable town centers, farmers' markets, and easy access to both nature and medical facilities.
