Slovenia offers retirees a gentle pace wrapped in alpine air and thermal springs. The country's compact size means you can settle into a quiet lakeside village like Bled or a spa town such as Rogaška Slatina, then explore medieval castles, vine-draped hillsides, and the Adriatic coast—all within an hour's drive. Public transport is reliable, English is widely spoken, and the cost of living remains modest. Whether you're drawn to the café culture of Ljubljana's pedestrian old town or the restorative waters of the Dolenjska region, Slovenia rewards those who savour slow mornings, local markets, and landscapes that shift from karst caves to mountain meadows.

Why Slovenia works for for retirees

Homes, not hotel rooms

Live in a real Slovenia home — kitchen, balcony, neighbourhood rhythm — instead of a generic hotel room.

Fair by design

1 credit = 1 night. Every home is worth the same. No bidding, no haggling, no price surges.

Curated for for retirees

We prioritise heating, air conditioning, wifi · house, apartment, villas — the kind of homes that actually fit the travel style.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

Which areas of Slovenia are best suited for retirees seeking a relaxed base?

Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj offer serene settings with easy walking paths, while the spa towns of Rogaška Slatina and Terme Čatež provide wellness facilities and gentle routines. Ljubljana's Trnovo and Krakovo neighbourhoods combine greenery with café life, and the Karst wine region near the Italian border delivers quiet villages, cellar doors, and mild coastal access. All are well-connected, with healthcare services nearby and a slower, welcoming rhythm that suits extended stays.
