The United States offers retirees an extraordinary canvas for extended stays and seasonal escapes. From the sun-drenched Gulf Coast communities where winter feels like a distant memory, to the historic charm of New England villages with their covered bridges and autumn foliage, you'll find neighbourhoods designed around slower rhythms. Many American towns cater beautifully to retirees—walkable downtown districts, excellent healthcare facilities nearby, senior centers with robust programming, and a culture that respects leisurely morning coffee rituals. Whether you're drawn to the desert tranquility of the Southwest, the coastal breezes of Carolina barrier islands, or the lake country of the Upper Midwest, home exchange lets you settle into these communities long enough to discover the local library's book club, the best farmers' market day, and which diner serves the perfect pie.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

Which regions in the United States are most comfortable for retirees seeking extended stays?

The Sun Belt states—Florida, Arizona, and coastal South Carolina—remain perennial favourites for their mild winters and established retirement communities. The Pacific Northwest appeals to those who prefer moderate summers and don't mind rain. Small college towns throughout the country offer cultural programming, walkability, and university hospitals. Consider the Gulf Coast for affordability and seafood culture, or the Finger Lakes region of New York for four-season beauty without extreme weather. Most American suburbs feature single-level ranch homes, accessible public spaces, and car-friendly layouts that suit retirees' practical needs.
