Vietnam offers retirees a rare blend of gentle pace and cultural richness. The country's affordable cost of living means your pension stretches further, whether you're lingering over slow-drip coffee in a Hanoi café or exploring the lantern-lit streets of Hoi An at dusk. Healthcare is surprisingly modern in major cities, with international-standard clinics and English-speaking doctors. The climate varies beautifully—temperate highlands around Da Lat provide cool respite, while coastal towns offer warm, restorative winters. Vietnamese culture honours age with genuine respect, and expat retiree communities are well-established, making it easy to find companionship while still feeling the thrill of somewhere wonderfully different.

Why Vietnam works for for retirees

Homes, not hotel rooms

Live in a real Vietnam home — kitchen, balcony, neighbourhood rhythm — instead of a generic hotel room.

Fair by design

1 credit = 1 night. Every home is worth the same. No bidding, no haggling, no price surges.

Curated for for retirees

We prioritise heating, air conditioning, wifi · house, apartment, villas — the kind of homes that actually fit the travel style.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What makes Vietnam particularly suitable for retirees seeking a longer stay?

Vietnam combines exceptional value with comfort and safety. Medical care in cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City rivals Western standards at a fraction of the cost. The food is fresh, light, and easily adaptable to dietary needs. Public spaces—parks, pagodas, lakeside promenades—encourage gentle daily routines, and the culture of morning tai chi and evening strolls aligns beautifully with a slower rhythm. English is increasingly common in expat-friendly neighbourhoods, and the visa process for longer stays has become more straightforward. The genuine warmth toward older visitors makes settling in feel natural rather than foreign.
