Things to Do Home Exchange in Iceland

Homes near the attractions, sights, and activities that matter.

Iceland rewards the restless. Beyond Reykjavík's compact museums and thermal pools, the entire island unfolds as a living gallery of geological drama—lava fields you can walk through, waterfalls thundering into black-sand canyons, ice caves that glow electric blue under winter light. Home exchange here means waking up with the freedom to chase the day's weather: a sudden clear spell sends you toward Jökulsárlón's icebergs, a moody morning suits the moss-draped lava at Dimmuborgir. You'll trade rigid tour schedules for kitchen-table route planning, packing thermoses for roadside hot springs and timing drives to catch the midnight sun or northern lights from your own doorstep.

Why Iceland works for things to do

Homes, not hotel rooms

Live in a real Iceland home — kitchen, balcony, neighbourhood rhythm — instead of a generic hotel room.

Fair by design

1 credit = 1 night. Every home is worth the same. No bidding, no haggling, no price surges.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What are the must-do natural experiences in Iceland that most visitors miss?

Skip the crowded Golden Circle stops at midday and visit Þingvellir at dawn, when the rift valley is silent and the light rakes across ancient lava. Seek out lesser-known hot springs like Reykjadalur's geothermal river—a short hike gets you soaking in warm water surrounded by steam vents and mountain views. In winter, explore ice caves beneath Vatnajökull with a local guide; the formations change yearly. Along the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, tide pools at Djúpalónssandur and the columnar basalt cliffs at Arnarstapi offer raw coastal beauty without the tour buses.
