Thailand rewards the perpetually curious with layers that unfold slowly: morning alms rounds in Chiang Mai's Old City, night markets sprawling under strings of bulbs in Bangkok, limestone karsts rising from turquoise shallows around Krabi. You can spend mornings learning to fold curry paste in a family kitchen, afternoons threading through jungle trails to hidden waterfalls, evenings watching shadow puppets in southern villages or catching Muay Thai bouts under open sky. The country's geography spans enough that a single trip can hold temple-hopping, island-hopping, mountain trekking, and urban exploration without feeling rushed. Staying in a local home puts you closer to the rhythms that matter—the fruit vendor's morning call, the best hour to visit a temple, the backstreet noodle stall that never makes the guidebooks.

Why Thailand works for things to do

Homes, not hotel rooms

Live in a real Thailand home — kitchen, balcony, neighbourhood rhythm — instead of a generic hotel room.

Fair by design

1 credit = 1 night. Every home is worth the same. No bidding, no haggling, no price surges.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What kinds of activities can I realistically fit into a Thailand home exchange trip?

Thailand's compact distances and excellent domestic transport let you mix experiences freely. A northern base gives you access to hill tribe villages, cooking schools, and temple circuits around Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Southern coastal stays open up snorkelling, rock climbing at Railay, and island day trips. Bangkok itself holds enough for weeks—rooftop bars, canal tours, sprawling weekend markets, historic districts. Many travellers anchor in one home for a week, then move to a second region to contrast mountains with coast or city with countryside. The key is resisting the urge to see everything; depth beats breadth here.
