Bulgaria's cities reveal layers of history at every turn. Sofia's Byzantine churches stand beside brutalist monuments and lively café streets. Plovdiv, one of Europe's oldest continuously inhabited cities, spreads across seven hills with a Roman amphitheatre still hosting performances in its ancient heart. Varna opens onto the Black Sea with a maritime garden and archaeological museum holding Thracian gold. Veliko Tarnovo clings to cliffsides above the Yantra River, its medieval fortress commanding views that explain centuries of strategic importance. Between them, you'll find art nouveau facades, Orthodox monasteries tucked into mountain valleys, and a café culture that moves at a decidedly unhurried Balkan pace.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

Which Bulgarian cities offer the most rewarding urban exploration for culture-focused travellers?

Sofia rewards wanderers with its compressed history—ninth-century rotundas, Ottoman mosques, and communist-era architecture within walking distance. Plovdiv's Old Town cobblestones lead through National Revival mansions and artist studios, while its Roman stadium runs beneath the main shopping street. Varna blends seaside promenades with serious archaeology, including the world's oldest processed gold. Veliko Tarnovo delivers dramatic fortress ruins and cliffside lanes. Each city operates on a walkable scale, with excellent public transport and English increasingly common in central districts.
