Colombia's cities unfold like chapters in a vibrant anthology, each with its own rhythm and character. Medellín's cable cars climb hillsides where innovation meets tradition, while Cartagena's walled colonial core glows amber at sunset. Bogotá sprawls across high plateaus, its museums and street art revealing layers of history and reinvention. Cali pulses with salsa culture, and smaller cities like Popayán and Villa de Leyva offer whitewashed colonial charm without the crowds. Staying in residential neighbourhoods gives you access to the mercados, corner tiendas, and evening paseos that define daily life—the kind of immersion that turns a visit into genuine understanding.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

Which Colombian cities offer the best balance of culture, safety, and walkability for urban explorers?

Medellín's El Poblado and Laureles neighbourhoods combine tree-lined streets, metro access, and a thriving café scene with strong infrastructure. Bogotá's La Candelaria and Chapinero offer museums, bookshops, and ciclovía Sundays when streets close to cars. Cartagena's Getsemaní buzzes with street life and is more authentic than the touristy walled city. For quieter exploration, Manizales and Pereira in the coffee region provide mountain backdrops and genuine paisa hospitality. Most cities have dedicated pedestrian zones and growing bike-share systems, making car-free exploration increasingly feasible.
