City Guide Home Exchange in India

In-depth destination guides for home exchangers.

India's cities unfold in layers—ancient temple quarters give way to art deco boulevards, spice markets hum beside glass-tower districts, and every neighbourhood tells a different century's story. For travellers who crave structure amid the sensory rush, settling into a local home offers the perfect launchpad: you'll navigate Delhi's metro like a commuter, find the quiet breakfast spot in Kolkata's lanes, or discover which Mumbai beach locals visit at dawn. Living in residential pockets rather than tourist corridors means you'll experience the rhythm of chai wallahs, evening cricket matches, and the aunties who know exactly which street vendor makes the best dosa.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

How do I navigate India's cities without getting overwhelmed as a first-time visitor?

Start with one neighbourhood and walk it thoroughly—Indian cities reward deep dives over surface skims. Use metro systems in Delhi, Bangalore, and Kolkata; they're efficient and air-conditioned. Learn a few Hindi or regional phrases; locals appreciate the effort and will guide you warmly. Eat where you see crowds of office workers at lunch. Accept that noise, density, and spontaneous detours are part of the texture. Most importantly, build rest into your days—India's urban energy is exhilarating but intense, and having a home base lets you recharge before the next adventure.
