Morocco's cities unfold like chapters in a living anthology, each with its own rhythm and architectural vernacular. Marrakech's medina pulses with souks and riad courtyards where light filters through carved cedar screens. Fes preserves medieval tanneries and labyrinthine alleyways that haven't changed their course in centuries. Casablanca offers Art Deco boulevards and oceanfront corniche walks, while Tangier straddles continents with whitewashed kasbah quarters overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar. Chefchaouen's blue-washed mountain lanes provide a cooler, contemplative counterpoint. Staying in residential neighbourhoods rather than tourist zones lets you navigate morning bread runs, neighbourhood hammams, and the cadence of call to prayer across rooftops.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

How do Moroccan cities differ in character and what should city explorers prioritize in each?

Marrakech rewards those who enjoy sensory intensity—haggling in souks, snake charmers in Jemaa el-Fnaa, late-night garden restaurants. Fes demands patience for its car-free medina; hire a guide initially or embrace getting lost among leather dyers and spice pyramids. Casablanca suits modernist architecture fans and those seeking coastal promenades with fewer tourists. Tangier offers literary history, expat cafés, and ferry access to Spain. Chefchaouen in the Rif Mountains provides hiking, artisan cooperatives, and Instagram-blue alleyways. Each city operates on its own clock—plan for midday quiet, evening promenades, and Friday market closures.
