Peru's cities unfold in layers—colonial plazas shadowed by baroque churches in Lima's Centro Histórico, terracotta rooftops cascading down Cusco's hillsides, and the white sillar stone architecture defining Arequipa's elegant squares. Each urban center pulses with its own rhythm: the cevicherías and huariques of Lima's neighbourhoods, the artisan workshops ringing Cusco's San Blas district, the evening paseo along Arequipa's Portal de Flores. Settling into a local home puts you within walking distance of mercados where vendors sell purple corn and lucuma, and lets you navigate cities as residents do—by micro districts, favourite bakeries, and the quiet streets where daily life actually happens.

Frequently asked questions
How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?
You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.
Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?
Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.
Do I need to swap directly with the same person?
No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.
Can I join if I don't own a home?
Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.
How do Peru's major cities differ in character and what should city explorers prioritize in each?
Lima rewards neighbourhood immersion—Barranco for bohemian lanes and ocean views, Miraflores for coastal parks, San Isidro for jacaranda-lined streets. Cusco demands acclimatization days to wander San Blas's steep cobblestones and discover chocolate workshops in colonial courtyards. Arequipa centers on the stunning Plaza de Armas, with volcanic stone monasteries and picanterías serving rocoto relleno in family-run spots. Trujillo offers colonial balconies and nearby Chan Chan ruins, while smaller cities like Ayacucho reveal Semana Santa traditions and artisan craft routes less travelled by international visitors.
