City Guide Home Exchange in Singapore

In-depth destination guides for home exchangers.

Singapore rewards the curious urban explorer with layers that unfold district by district. Beyond the postcard skyline, you'll find Tiong Bahru's art deco blocks and old-school kopitiams, Katong's Peranakan shophouses painted in pastel geometry, and Kampong Glam's Sultan Mosque framed by indie boutiques and late-night shisha joints. The MRT stitches it all together in minutes, making deep neighbourhood dives entirely feasible in a long weekend. Street food centres like Maxwell and Tekka offer edible anthropology lessons, while riverside walks along Robertson Quay and the Southern Ridges trail prove this city-state hasn't paved over everything green.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

Which Singapore neighbourhoods offer the most authentic local character beyond the tourist centre?

Tiong Bahru blends heritage architecture with third-wave coffee culture and weekend markets. Katong and Joo Chiat showcase Peranakan heritage through colourful facades, traditional kueh bakeries, and laksa specialists. Kampong Glam centres on Malay-Arab culture with the Sultan Mosque, textile traders, and contemporary Middle Eastern cafes. For a quieter residential feel, Bukit Timah offers proximity to nature reserves and hawker centres where English takes a backseat to Hokkien and Mandarin. Each district has its own MRT stop, making base-yourself-anywhere exploration practical.
