City Guide Home Exchange in Switzerland

In-depth destination guides for home exchangers.

Switzerland's cities reveal themselves in layers—medieval old towns give way to cutting-edge design districts, while lakefront promenades connect museum quarters to hidden courtyards where locals gather. Each urban center claims its own character: Zurich's creative Kreis 5 neighborhood hums with galleries and rooftop bars, Basel's Rhine-side culture strip draws art pilgrims year-round, and Geneva's international quarter buzzes in French while the Carouge district feels decidedly Bohemian. Trams glide you between architectural eras, from Romanesque fountains to Calatrava bridges, and every city unfolds best on foot—compact cores mean you can breakfast by a Gothic cathedral, lunch in a glass-walled food market, and watch sunset from a river swimming spot all in one afternoon.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

How walkable are Swiss cities, and what's the best way to explore multiple neighborhoods in a day?

Swiss cities are exceptionally walkable, with most historic centers entirely pedestrianized and key districts within twenty minutes of each other on foot. Zurich, Basel, Bern, and Lausanne all offer seamless tram networks that run every few minutes, accepting the same day passes that also cover lakeboats and funiculars. Locals favor walking along rivers and lakeshores to connect neighborhoods—Zurich's Limmat promenade, Bern's Aare loops, Geneva's Jet d'Eau waterfront—which double as scenic shortcuts. Rent a city bike (many systems offer free short-term loans) to reach hillside viewpoints or outlying creative quarters without breaking stride.
