Japan rewards the unhurried traveller. Retirees find a culture built on courtesy, safety, and seasonal ritual — from soaking in onsen hot springs to strolling temple gardens where maple leaves turn crimson in autumn. Train travel is punctual and accessible, with senior discounts on JR passes. Quieter cities like Kanazawa and Takayama offer craft heritage and slower rhythms, while Kyoto's traditional machiya townhouses and neighbourhood sentō bathhouses invite you to settle into local life. The pace here suits reflection, and the infrastructure — from spotless public transport to neighbourhood clinics — makes extended stays surprisingly easy.

Why Japan works for for retirees

Homes, not hotel rooms

Live in a real Japan home — kitchen, balcony, neighbourhood rhythm — instead of a generic hotel room.

Fair by design

1 credit = 1 night. Every home is worth the same. No bidding, no haggling, no price surges.

Curated for for retirees

We prioritise heating, air conditioning, wifi · house, apartment, villas — the kind of homes that actually fit the travel style.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What makes Japan a comfortable long-stay destination for retirees?

Japan combines exceptional safety, cleanliness, and public infrastructure with a culture that respects age and routine. Healthcare is world-class, and many neighbourhoods have walkable access to parks, markets, and quiet cafés. The language barrier softens in residential areas where gestures and patience go far. Seasonal festivals, pottery villages, and coastal hot spring towns offer enriching rhythms without the exhaustion of constant sightseeing. Train networks are senior-friendly, and longer stays let you discover the grace of daily rituals — morning markets, neighbourhood shrines, evening walks along canals.
