Peru offers retirees a rare combination of cultural richness, manageable pace, and year-round mild weather in many regions. The Sacred Valley and Arequipa provide comfortable altitudes with springlike climates, while coastal cities like Lima offer oceanfront neighbourhoods perfect for leisurely walks along the malecón. Markets brim with fresh produce, artisan textiles, and unhurried conversation. Many expat communities have taken root in Cusco and the highlands, creating welcoming social networks. Whether you're drawn to ancient ruins within an hour's reach or quiet colonial plazas where afternoons unfold over café con leche, Peru rewards those who travel slowly and stay curious.

Why Peru works for for retirees

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

Which areas of Peru are most comfortable for retirees seeking a slower pace?

Arequipa and the Sacred Valley towns like Urubamba offer mild climates, walkable centres, and strong expat networks. Coastal Miraflores and Barranco in Lima provide ocean views, excellent healthcare access, and flat terrain ideal for daily strolls. Altitude can be a consideration—Cusco sits at 3,400 metres, while Arequipa is lower at 2,300 metres and generally easier to adjust to. Most of these areas have reliable services, English-speaking doctors, and vibrant weekly markets that make long stays both practical and enriching.
