Switzerland offers retirees a graceful blend of mountain serenity and effortless infrastructure. The country's legendary rail network connects alpine villages to lakeside towns without the stress of driving, while its walkable historic centres—from Lucerne's covered bridges to Bern's arcaded streets—invite leisurely exploration. The pace here suits unhurried days: morning markets brimming with local cheeses, thermal baths tucked into mountain valleys, and afternoon tea overlooking Lake Geneva. Healthcare standards are exceptional, English is widely spoken in tourist areas, and the Swiss commitment to accessibility means cable cars and cogwheel trains open up dramatic landscapes without strenuous hiking. It's a destination that rewards those who savour quality over quantity.

Frequently asked questions
How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?
You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.
Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?
Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.
Do I need to swap directly with the same person?
No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.
Can I join if I don't own a home?
Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.
What makes Switzerland particularly suited for retirees travelling independently?
Switzerland's infrastructure removes common travel anxieties. The Swiss Travel System connects even remote villages with punctual trains, boats, and postbuses, all barrier-free and easy to navigate. Many alpine resorts offer gentle walking paths and accessible cable cars with senior discounts. Towns like Montreux, Interlaken, and Lugano balance natural beauty with flat promenades, excellent medical facilities nearby, and a culture that respects slower rhythms. Dining leans toward earlier hours, and the Swiss franc's stability means no currency surprises. The country genuinely accommodates travellers who value comfort, reliability, and independence.
